We present a progress report on the study of the properties of the dense molecular gas in a sample of nearby IR luminous galaxies. Our preliminary results suggest that the ratio of the HCN(3-->2) to HCN(1-->0) intensity can be used to tightly constrain the density of the dense gas. One galaxy of our sample shows a very unusual line ratio, which might be due to the presence of both of an AGN and a nuclear starburst in this galaxy.
