Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are very massive evolved stars (>60M solar). In the LBV phase the stars loose large amounts of mass, show various kinds of variability and are highly unstable. As a consequence they can undergo so-called giant eruptions and form LBV nebulae. A comparison of the LBVs in the Milky Way and the LMC shows already differences, especially in the expansion velocity of the nebulae. The number of known LBVs is still small, nevertheless, it is striking that LBVs in starburst regions seem to be rare, while simultaneously massive main-sequence stars and Wolf-Rayet stars are present. Are LBVs missing in these active regions?
