The components of the perceptual behavior of a group of astronomers was studied along with some examples of the organization of resources in space and time in astronomy. It is apparent that the work of constructing visual representations at the beginning of astronomical practice happens through the utilization of categories which are not explicitly defined but which nonetheless are no less effective in their incorporation into a perceptual behavior developed by astronomers during their training and their confrontation with their objective. The origin and nature of these categories is reviewed. The processes covered by the concept of laboratory work, as recently used in the sociology of the sciences are brought up to date. To do this, characteristics of astronomical practice with respect to the structure of utilization of resources in time and space were identified and contrasted through definition of the mechanisms allowing this structuring. These mechanisms should be considered to supplant the laboratory notion.
