A statistical analysis is presented of Pc 5 pulsations observed by the Wick component of the SABRE auroral radar during the 1985-1989 time period. Results of the analysis indicate that the occurrence of poleward-propagating events peaks near midnight whereas for equatorward-propagating events the occurrence peaks at about 18:00 U.T. A further class of event is observed, where the phase propagation changes direction during the event. Each event is characterized by the estimated position of the plasmapause, based upon an empirical relationship between plasmapause L-shell and both local time and Kp. Poleward-propagating events are found to occur mostly for low plasmapause L-shells, and equatorward propagating events occur mostly at higher L-shells. It is concluded that the equatorward-propagating pulsations correspond to resonant structures at the plasmapause, whereas the majority of the poleward propagating pulsations observed by SABRE correspond to field line resonances within the plasma trough.
