The partitioning of Ga and Ge between synthetic basaltic melts, forsterite, diopside, anorthite, and spinel is measured experimentally in the system forsterite-anorthite-diopside. The effects of different superliquidus temperatures, cooling rates, run temperatures, durations, and compositions on the partitioning of Ga and Ge are investigated. The partition coefficient for Ga between forsterite is 0.024, between diopside is 0.19, between anorthite is 0.86, and between spinel is 4.6. For Ge between forsterite, diopside, anorthite, and spinel the coefficients are 0.62, 1.4, 0.51, and 0.1, respectively. The derived partitioning coefficients are applied to natural basaltic and mantle samples from the earth and basalts from the moon and the shergottite parent body. The data reveal that Ga and Ge are indicators of mantle melting and crystallization processes in the earth, moon, and meteorite parent bodies and that they provide a means of tracing heterogeneity in the source regions of planetary basalts.
