The Swedish Viking satellite was designed to study space plasma phenomena, particularly processes producing auroras, near the Earth and in the ionosphere and magnetosphere. It studies auroral particle acceleration regions; sources of auroral particles; energy transfer in the magnetosphere; kilometer waves; and polar cap arcs. Instruments include an ultraviolet imager, plasma probes, and a flux gate magnetometer.
