Sounding rocket and balloon investigations for atmosphere, astrophysics, and microgravity research are described. Magnetosphere and ionosphere physics, including measurements of charged particles and electrical and magnetic fields; upper atmosphere physics and chemistry, including studies of the composition of the atmosphere at altitudes of 80 to 150 km; astrophysics, comprising studies of stars and galaxies in the UV and IR; and material and fluid science in microgravity, comprising experiments in solidification of alloys and diffusion processes in liquid metals are covered. Developments in attitude control, telemetry, and long duration sounding rockets are outlined. Infrared observations of the interstellar medium, and studies on nitrogen-oxygen photochemistry and transport in the upper atmosphere are planned. Studies on auroral electrodynamics are proposed and investigation of the structure and dynamics of the middle atmosphere above the northern polar region during summer is discussed.
