New spectroscopic data are presented for the disturbed spiral galaxy NGC 4319 and the high-redshift, quasar-like object Markarian 205. Spectra taken at various positions in the galaxy are image processed and analyzed in detail. Surprisingly, there is almost no Hα emission present. Instead, the emission lines of [N II] λλ6548, 6584 are widely detected, pointing to the presence of a low-density shock-excited gas (Hα/[N II] λ6584 < 0.3). The spectra yield a partial velocity field in the disk of NGC 4319 which shows that an arc of gas near the UV knot, and opposite Mrk 205, is expanding with a velocity V ≍ 10 3 km s-1. The UV knot itself shows a possible expansion velocity near 70 km s-1. The above evidence suggests (1) that NGC 4319 is an internally active spiral galaxy and (2) that the high-density gas has been explosively removed from the disk of the galaxy. The discovery of the expanding gas (and UV knot) opposite Mrk 205, along with the generally directed and two-sided character of ejection events in galaxies, supports the conclusion that Mrk 205 was ejected from NGC 4319.
