From 31 BVI CCD frames obtained with the 1.54 m Danish telescope at La Silla ESO, the authors have constructed V versus B-V, V versus V-I, and V versus B-I color-magnitude diagrams in a 4arcmin×2arcmin.5 field of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Using Y = 0.2, [Fe/H] = -0.49, α = 1.65, a distance modulus (m-M)v = 13.2 and E(B-V) = 0.04, the authors deduce from the location of the main-sequence turnoff a consistent age for 47 Tuc in all three color indices of 17×109yr. The agreement between observation and theory is less good for the subgiant branches plotted using colors incorporating the I band. The good fit between observation and theory with [Fe/H] = -0.49, and the poor fit with [Fe/H] = -0.79, favors the choice of a value near -0.5 as the best metal abundance for 47 Tuc.
