Monte Carlo calculations of the early UV spectra of supernova 1987A are presented. These confirm the crucial role of line blocking in the differentially expanding atmosphere in explaining the unusual and rapidly changing appearance of the IUE spectra as well as providing identifications for several major features. Consistent with the expectation of a relatively massive progenitor, the largely successful reproduction of the UV spectra is achieved with the present day LMC metallicity, Z_sun;/2.75.
