The authors present first results of a spectroscopic study of the P Cyg-type Hα profiles of SN 1987a in the LMC, covering the period February 25.1 until March 29.2. During that time, the terminal velocity of the absorption trough decreased from -31000 to -11600 km/s, and the velocity of the minimum of the absorption trough from -18000 to -7400 km/s. The peak emission velocity was around -4000 km/s at the end of February, around 0 km/s between March 10 and 25 and around -400 km/s afterwards. A weak, later pronounced peak in the blueward emission wing developed on March 17.4; a bump in the redward emission wing has been visible since March 19.
