In recent papers, McCarthy et al. (1985) and Skrutskie et al. (1987) report the discovery around nearby M dwarfs of halos at 2.2 microns, interpreted as scattering of the central starlight by dusty envelopes. The present observations of the same stars by infrared speckle interferometry do not reveal any significant amount of extended emission: both stars appear as point sources in the limit of the accuracy currently reached by infrared speckle observations. The available data are compared, and the discrepancies are discussed in terms of variability of the transfer function.
