The authors have used the COSMOS automatic, high-speed, plate-scanning machine at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh in order to obtain new and objective star counts down to faint limiting magnitudes (B ≡ 22.5, R ≡ 21.5) in the region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The counts have been analysed using digital unsharp-masking techniques and reveal previously undetected features in the area to the North-East of the Cloud. These features appear to be concentric about the SMC, extending Southwards into the Wing, and may form part of a ring or shell-type structure in this region of the Cloud. The results reported herein invite a possible new interpretation of the "outer arm" of the SMC as part of a similar structure. These shell-like features also suggest an explanation for the shape of the main subcondensations in the Wing of the SMC.
