This article is concerned with the origin of the light elements in the earliest stages of the development of the universe and with the determination of the frequencies of these elements in interstellar matter, especially by means of radiospectroscopy. The cosmological consequences that follow from the most recent measurements of these frequencies are shown. The open vs closed universe duality is discussed. The big bang model explanation of the origin of the light elements is given. The effect of the development of galaxies on the frequencies of the heavier elements (their formation in stars) is described. The frequency of the normal isotope of helium in the Magellanic Clouds is reviewed. New results obtained with the 100-m telescope at MP Institute for Radioastronomy are presented.
