The Hercules X-1 X-ray source and its optical counterpart, HZ Herculis, are described. Three types of periodic phenomena exist at X-ray frequencies: a 1.24-second period, eclipses every 1.70 days, and a 35-day 'on-off' period. Possible explanations for these phenomena, including their optical counterparts and the nature of the binary system, are considered. The X-ray source has an orbital radius of 3.954 million km, orbital velocity of 169.2 km/sec, and mass about that of the sun. The occulting star has a radius about 2.5 times that of the sun. HZ Herculis shows rapid and irregular flickering; its 35-day brightness cycle is irregular over long periods of time.
