A distant dwarf nova has been discovered at about 3.0 kpc below the galactic plane. The large amplitude of dwarf novae, of the order of 2-4 mag, means that if one of them flares during a sequence of observations, it will stand out among other variables, especially quasars, which rarely have an amplitude much larger than 1 mag. Assuming that the volume sampled is representative of the halo as a whole, their frequency may be estimated by comparison with the RR Lyrae survey of the same field.
