Theoretical simulations have been performed of the sequence of hot luminous stars in young stellar clusters formed by main-sequence stars plus H-shell burning stars after the phase of overall contraction (OC). It is found that the location of the OC phase is revealed by an abrupt variation in the slope of the star luminosity function. This occurrence is discussed in the frame of open questions about the H-burning evolution of intermediate-mass stars, showing that the shape of the luminosity function should be able to discriminate whether or not convective core overshooting is efficient in these stars.
