A digital sky photometer has been constructed and attached to the 48-inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar Mountain. The instrument allows plates to be automatically exposed to a predetermined level of sky density, with continuous monitoring of the sky brightness in that region of the sky and spectrum that exposes the plate. In addition to facilitating the correct exposure of the plate, the sky counts provide a calibration of the plate based on the sky density. A small circular aperture is provided for reference calibrations on standard stars.
