The observational evidence for the presence of massive black holes in galactic centers is examined, giving attention to elliptical and spiral galaxies. The limits on the size of a central black hole are considered along with the possible size of retarded cores and questions regarding the nature of a galaxy containing a central black hole. The possibility of the existence of white rather than black holes at the centers of galaxies is also taken into account.
