We report on an on-going survey of 55 long GRB host galaxies at mid-infrared wavelengths (i.e., 3 ≲ λ ≲ 30 μm) using the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our very low rate of detections argues against a population harboring luminous dusty starbursts in already-evolved and massive galaxies, which contrasts with previous claims based on submillimeter and radio observations. Given the contribution of such luminous and dusty galaxies to the cosmic growth of structures, we infer that long GRBs are biased tracers of star formation possibly favored in low-metallicity environments. In the case of the host of GRB 980425 the MIPS-24 μm observations reveal a luminous compact source responsible for ~ 80% of the mid-IR emission of the entire galaxy. It is associated with a bright HII region located ~ 900 pc away from the position where the GRB occured. The possible connection between GRB 980425 and this luminous star-forming region is not understood yet but it could open a new window on the exploration of the origin of long GRBs.
