Abstract

In September 2007, we obtained a tentative detection of CO in the remarkable ULIRG F00183-7111, but were unable to confirm it because of the limited bandwidth of the ATCA. Here we request time with the CABB to confirm this detection and measure the line profile. The observation has two goals. Our astrophysical goal is first to measure the line width and velocity, and perhaps even absorption, to try to understand the role of molecular gas in this composite AGN/ULIRG source. This source is the most luminous example of a class of objects which are believed to represent an important but poorly-understood step in galaxy evolution. Perhaps even more importantly, we hope eventually to image the CO in the source using an ATCA configuration with longer baselines. The observation proposed here in a compact configuration is the first step towards this. Our technical goal is to conduct a shared-risk pilot observation to test the capability of CABB to measure broad extragalactic lines at mm wavelengths. This will be the first such observation using the ATCA, and we need to see if there are any unexpected features that will affect such observations in the future.
