We propose to map the distribution of the 1-0 lines of N2H+, HCN, HCO+ and H13CO+ in 5 nearby cluster forming regions. These observations will allow us to identify the dense starless cores in each region. Together with observations of N2H+ 3-2 and N2D+ 3-2, we will measure their degree of deuteration, column density, volume density, size, line widths, velocity gradients, and infall motions. We will compare the results to those of isolated dense starless cores, and so determine how the initial conditions compare between isolated to clustered star forming regions. We will thus address the fundamental question: What are the initial conditions for star formation in clusters?
