Two definitions of a celestial absolute reference frame are proposed: a geometric one based on the positions of extragalactic sources, and a dynamic one based on the motion of the moon and the planets. Two methods of extending the celestial absolute reference frames are discussed: successive interferometric observations at various wavelengths and the use of an intermediate terrestrial system. The system of star positioning by space astrometry, proposed by Lacroute, plays an important role in both cases. An experiment is suggested that will be essential in all studies where slow and long-period motions are involved.
