Ever since the onset of X-ray spectroscopy of neutron-star sources, an attempt has been made to probe their chemical surface composition, so far without success: The thermal components of the spectra have turned out to be perfect blackbodies. This finding is likely due to the presence of an optically thick pair corona, created by a steady bombardment with relativistic electrons and positrons.
