We propose to observe a region of 20'x25' extent in the densest part of the nearby Lupus 1 molecular cloud in high density sensitive species, such as N2H+ and CS. The aim is to identify sites of potential, as well as active star formation, and to examine the origin of the Initial Mass Function. Previous molecular maps of the Lupus 1 region have been at too low resolution (HPBW > 1'), and in molecules (13CO and C18O J=1-0) which are no ideal tracers of pre-stellar condensations. The Mopra 22m antenna is the ideal facility to carry out this program in close-by southern regions like Lupus (d=150pc). This is because the beam size at 90 GHz corresponds to a linear scale of 0.025pc, well-matched to sampling the condensations with typical sizes of 0.1pc. The selected region is part of the target area to be mapped in six photometric bands by the Herschel satellite in its Guaranteed Time Program, which will provide spectral energy distributions of the dust emission. This synergy between Mopra and Herschel allows an analysis of the pre-stellar and early star forming condensations both in their gas and dust components.
