Radiofrequency spectra of Cygnus X-3, between 0.4 and 22.2 GHz, have been compiled at 17 epochs during the giant radio outbursts of September 1972. Assuming that synchrotron radiation is responsible for the emission process, four absorption mechanisms have been considered to account for the low-frequency turnover of the spectra: (1) self absorption by the radiating relativistic particles, (2) free-free absorption by a thermal plasma uniformly mixed with radiating particles, (3) free-free absorption by a thermal plasma surrounding the radiating particles, and (4) is found to provide the best overall fit to the observed spectra. The results of the spectra analysis provide a useful test of models proposed to explain the temporal variations of the flux density of Cygnus X-3 during an outburst.
