We review the major analytical advances of the last few years in our understanding of the two-body problem and the gravitational-wave generation problem in binary black hole systems. We then discuss how the analytical post-Newtonian predictions, notably the Taylor-expanded and effective-one-body-resummed models, compare to the numerical relativity predictions for the gravitational-wave signal and the recoil velocity of merging black holes. A full analytical description of the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary black hole systems is an important avenue to template construction as eventually thousands of waveform templates may be needed to extract the gravitational-wave signal from the detector noise. Moreover, a full analytical modeling of the recoil velocity of merging black holes can improve our understanding of hierarchical structure formation, and help in making more robust predictions for supermassive black hole coalescence rates.
