A variety of problems concerning the solar dynamo are studied. The argument of Krause and Raedler (1971), that Leighton's (1969) model of the solar cycle can function only because of its singular regeneration term, is shown to be essentially invalid. It is pointed out that the poleward migration of the curve of zero radial field strength can be reproduced in the theory of Steenbeck and Krause (1969) as well as in Leighton's model, if corresponding assumptions concerning the law of rotation and the field regeneration term are made. Effects of meridional circulation are briefly discussed. The effect of turbulent magnetic diffusion is illustrated and arguments against Piddington's (1971b, 1972) criticism of the solar dynamo are given. The usual approximations for a quantitative calculation of the alpha-effect and possible improvements are discussed. Longitude-dependent solutions of the dynamo equations are investigated in the context of the sector structure of the large scale photospheric field.
