Sound wave propagation in a primeval plasma, after the equivalence red-shift and at the epoch of hydrogen recombination, is studied on the basis of a kinetic approach. As far as the epoch before recombination is concerned, a number of very slight differences from the conclusions usually obtained from the fluid model are found. In fact, although two possible formal modes of propagation are possible also before recombination, one of the modes which propagates at a speed close to the proton thermal velocity is found to be damped over distances of the order of a few wavelengths. During recombination and after, the two modes are still present but both of them may be simultaneously strongly damped, or it may happen that two different kinds of compression waves with different velocities propagate through the matter and the radiation separately.
