We have obtained CCD images with the 105-cm Kiso Observatory Schmidt telescope of the peculiar spiral galaxy NGC 4826 (the 'Black Eye Galaxy'), which was recently reported to have H I gas in its inner regions with a sense of rotation opposite to that of the H I gas in the outer disk. The counter-rotation is a unique phenomenon for a spiral galaxy which is probably due to a merger event. In support of this idea, we present evidence for a spiral arm in the inner parts of the galaxy whose sense leads the direction of rotation of the outer H I gas. If this is the same direction as the rotation of the outer stellar disk, then NGC 4826 would be only the second galaxy known to possess a leading spiral arm. The only other morphological peculiarity of the galaxy is the prominent dust absorption in the inner 'Black Eye' region, which corresponds to the locus of the counter-rotating stars and gas. This indicates that the merger was probably with a considerably smaller galaxy.
