From new measurements conducted at Pic du Midi Observatory with the scanning heliometer from July 1993 to May 1995, the authors deduced a variability of the solar oblateness with the solar cycle. This would have important implications not only for the terrestrial climate - because changes in the Sun's total energy output implies a variability that climate modelers could no longer ignore - but also for astrometry and in providing information related to the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun.
