Certain major characteristics of globular clusters (metallicities, total numbers) are strongly influenced by the size and type of their host galaxy. However, other characteristics such as the cluster mass distribution function are virtually independent of environment or age. A theory for the formation of globular clusters which can accurately predict a wide range of the observations is one in which protoclusters form by collisional accretion within very large reservoirs of gas (10(8) - 10(9) Msun supergiant molecular clouds, i.e. Searle-Zinn fragments). This model also suggests that the formation of halos of large galaxies, along with their embedded massive star clusters, might have strongly resembled -- on a larger scale -- what we see happening in interacting or starburst galaxies today.
