The nebular extinction curve towards HD 44179 is shown to be similar to the interstellar curve towards a star in which the FUV extinction is very strong. The hypothesis that the interstellar and nebular extinctions have the same carrier is adopted to test a new theory in which the dominant component of the UV extinction is attributed to fullerane molecules and their ions. The variable component is so strong in the nebula that it is the only source of opacity that may plausibly be associated with emission phenomena energized by UV light, such as the unidentified IR emission or the extended red emission; if the absorption is attributable to the fulleranes then these emission phenomena might also be, and vice versa. It is suggested that all of the peculiarities in the spectrum of the Red Rectangle may be attributable to the presence of a high density of fulleranes in the nebula, and to the effect of the strong UV flux of HD 44179 on them.
