The observation of a short-lived, remarkably narrow component in the H-alpha and H-beta emission lines, identified in high-resolution spectra of the circumstellar medium of SN 1987A is reported. The narrow emission is spatially unresolved and is not part of the bright ring nebula. The emitting gas had a temperature of less than about 1000 K. The observed luminosity and evolution of the narrow component can be accounted for under the assumption that an additional cooling mechanism is present and that the line width is compatible with a temperature of about 1000 K. This requires a cloud of gas about 1.4 light-day across, of density (1-2) x 10 exp 5/cu cm, lying 1.6 light year behind the supernova. It is argued that this cloud may have resulted from dynamical instabilities in the interaction zone of the progenitor's blue supergiant and red supergiant winds.
