Rectilinear particle transport is explored in a regime which occurs immediately after injection, before the pitch-angle distribution has had time to reach an equilibrium state. To understand transport phenomena in this regime, conventional descriptions of scattering are abandoned in favor of coefficients of pitch-angle scattering which are independent of pitch angle. Although these coefficients do not correspond to reality, they make it possible to visualize particle transport in terms of random walks, and to derive a nearly exact analytic description of particle propagation. This description is summarized by a simple formula which gives the distribution function in terms of pitch angle, position, and time. These derivations were guided and confirmed by comparison with results from large-scale Monte Carlo simulations.
