The aim of the FONDUE working group is to create a series of tools which can help to cross-calibrate ultraviolet spectrometers and photometers in space. Although ground calibrations are essential for an accurate knowledge of an ultraviolet instrument, space calibrations are absolutely necessary to understand the aging of the instrument after launch and during its operating lifetime, i.e. how its sensitivity varies with time.
The FONDUE working group was selected by the International Space Institute (ISSI, Bern : http://www.issibern.ch/) to provide a series of methods and tools which can help calibrate UV instruments in space. For point sources, the methods studied are based on stellar observations. For extended sources, the working group uses observations of the interplanetary background, observations of comets and mutual observations between instruments. Measurements of the moon albedo at different phase angles can also be used.
To achieve this goal, the FONDUE web site (http://bdap.ipsl.fr/fondue) will provide reports on the activities of the group and datasets from various UV instruments which can be used for comparisons.
As an illustration of the activities of this group, we will study the cross-calibration of various UV instruments which flew on past or are flying on present space and planetary missions (Voyager-UVS, SOHO-SWAN, Galileo-UVS/EUV, Cassini-UVIS, Mars Express-SPICAM, Venus Express-SPICAV, SORCE-SOLSTICE, IUE, HST-STIS). Our aim is to create a comprehensive dataset of the observations made by these instruments and try to alleviate some of the discrepancies which still remain today.
