We have used ASCA to observe the error box of the well known burst source GRB 781119 whose source was thought to be a compact object. In a 17 ksec observation, we did not identify any x-ray source within the GRB error box. Using the observed counting rate and assuming blackbody radiation, a 3σ upper limit may be estimated to be 2.2×10-13 erg cm-2 s-1. This is probably not inconsistent with the results of previous Einstein and EXOSAT observations, and is two orders of magnitude more sensitive that in previous searches for GRB x-ray counterparts in the 5-10 keV energy range. The expected flux from a neutron star radiating as a blackbody radiation is calculated. We find that if GRB 781119 is associated with a neutron star, its temperature needs to be low (<106 K) and/or its distance must be at least several kpc, in order to be consistent with our ASCA observation.
