ICAPS stands for "Interactions in Cosmic and Atmospheric Particle Systems" and is a novel international facility for the International Space Station under the umbrella of the European Space Agency. Due to similar physical behavior involved, namely the interaction between solid and liquid particles, gases and electromagnetic radiation, the ICAPS science team encompasses researchers from diverse fields, such as aerosol physics, atmospheric physics, planetary sciences, and astrophysics. ICAPS will simulate e.g., the formation of clouds, the phoretic motion of aerosols in the atmosphere, dust aggregation phenomena leading to the formation of planets, the physical properties of regoliths on the surfaces of small Solar System bodies, and radiation transport phenomena in dust clouds or dust layers. An overview of the capabilities of and the research planned with ICAPS will be given.
