A forwards integration in the frame of the sun-Jupiter-Saturn model over 1 Myr shows that the asteroid 2335 James is located in the secular resonance nu16 James is an omega-librator during the whole period. A complex orbital evolution appears in a backwards integration over 5 Myr: James is temporarily located also in the nu5 secular resonance. The argument of perihelion omega alternates between circulation and libration. A theoretical explanation for this complex behavior is provided. In a sun-Mars-Jupiter-Saturn model, close encounters of James with Mars occur without ejecting James from the nu16 resonance region. The integration of a cloud of test objects surrounding the orbit of James confirms the chaotic nature of this resonance region as indicated by theory.
