Giant extragalactic H II regions (GEHR) have been analyzed with emphasis placed on the spatial distribution of relevant parameters. The results indicate that the metallicity Z is constant across the area under consideration of a given GEHR. The same applies to the He/H and Ne/O abundance ratios. All the GEHR are found to have He/H = 0.075 within 30 percent, without any trend with Z. Particular attention is given to the possible causes of the point-to-point spectral variations within a GEHR. It is argued that the spatial distribution of the line ratios should be attributed to fluctuations in the ionization parameter. These variations are not produced by inhomogeneities in the electron density, but are associated with the aging and evolution of the ionizing stellar clusters.
