The Vulcain 2 engine will power the Ariane 5 Evolution launcher, that is being developed in the framework of a programme of the European Space Agency (ESA), which has granted the financial and technical management of this programme to the French Space Agency (CNES). Snecma is the prime contractor for the engine development. Increased performance of the new launcher compared to the current Ariane 5 launcher is obtained in particular through larger engine thrust and higher mixture ratio. Compared to Vulcain 1, redesign of LOX turbopump, thrust chamber and nozzle extension was necessary, while other components (LH2 turbopump, gas generator valves, lines and supports) need only minor adaptations. Two engine test facilities are used in parallel for the development : the P5 at DLR Lampoldshausen (Germany), and the PF50 at Snecma Vernon (France). 50.000 s of cumulated test duration before first flight are foreseen. The status of the first engine qualification tests and obtained main results are presented, together with the general progress of the programme, knowing that the development is now in the final qualification phase.
