Our new search engine, http://pds-rings.seti.org/search/, represents an innovative approach to the problem of how to search for data across multiple, disparate data sets. It currently supports searches for data from Cassini CIRS, Cassini ISS, Cassini VIMS, New Horizons LORRI, Galileo SSI, and Voyager ISS. Note that searches support all data products, not just rings related data. Additional data sets and products are added regularly.
The search engine allows the user to begin a search at a very high level, and is able to drill down toward the products that meet a particular need. As the number of matches decreases, the search enables finer granularity by allowing the user to constrain more specific parameters. For example, a general search for Enceladus data will not allow the user to specify a filter name, but this option becomes available once the search has been narrowed to images from Cassini or Voyager.
We generate enhanced geometric metadata based entirely upon SPICE kernels and use this to reconstruct the details of the field of view. We do high granularity sampling of each field of view rather than, say, just checking the coordinates at an image center. The result is a set of reliable ranges for the coordinates within the field of view. With these, it becomes practical to issue a query along the lines of, "find all images of the Encke Gap with a phase angle of greater than 160°".
After a query is complete, the user uses thumbnails, footprint diagrams, and tabular information to select products or sets of products and add them to the "shopping cart.” When the user is finished, the entire contents of the cart are zipped up into a single file for downloading including a user tailored table of the associated metadata.
