X-Ray Sources: Optical Identifications, X-Ray Sources: Quasars

Scientific paper

By using Bayes' theorem, a probability analysis method was suggested to assess the validity of identifications of X-ray sources with their optical counterparts. As an example, the author applied this method to calculate the probability of identification of RX J1100.6+4300 as a quasar with redshift of 0.32 discovered by Zhao et al. (1994) using the 2.16 m telescope. The calculation showed the probability of such an identification is as high as 90%, which proves that the identification is most probably true.
