Scientific paper
During the past 20 years, different methods have been developed to identify the modes of nonradially pulsating stars. Recently, mode identification has been performed by means of spectroscopic observations. In this paper we give an interpretation of the Fourier analysis for a line profile from a star with nonradial pulsations based on the Doppler imaging principle. We also clarify the relationship between a pulsation velocity field on the stellar surface and its product, a line profile. Using this approach, the pulsation velocity field on the stellar surface can be recovered from the line profile. Considering that there are some drawbacks to the present methods of mode identification based on Doppler imaging, further work should be done to improve these methods so that we can obtain more accurate information on stellar pulsations from line profile analysis.
