We have measured the complex refractive index of molecular iodine in the gas-phase in the wavenumber range between σ=11500 and 17800 cm-1 with a resolution of approximately 7 cm-1. The low-resolution absorption spectrum compares favorably well with existing spectra from the literature. The wavenumber-dependence of the polarizability α(σ), which is obtained from the refractive index spectrum by means of the Lorenz-Lorentz relation, is recorded for the first time in this wavenumber range and the vibrational energy spacing of the B state of iodine is also resolved in the polarizability spectrum. Fitting the measured polarizability data to a two-term Kramers-Heisenberg dispersion relation yields a static value of α(0)=10.33(28)×10-30 m3.
