The gas-phase refractivity (n-1) of the metallocenes ferrocene, Fe(C5H5)2, ruthenocene, Ru(C5H5)2, and osmocene, Os(C5H5)2, has been determined by dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy and other traditional interferometric techniques in the wavenumber-range between 11500 cm-1 and 20000 cm-1. The results are used to calculate the frequency-dependence of the mean dipole-polarizability α(ω) according to the Lorenz-Lorentz-relation. We observe an increase in the mean dipole-polarizability with increasing molecular weight. Extrapolation to zero frequency yields the electronic part of the static mean dipole-polarizability, α(0), which also increases in the sequence from ferrocene to osmocene as 126.13(66)au, 133.1(1.2)au, and 138.5(4.8)au.
