The formation of galaxies is one of the most important unsolved problems in astrophysics. The research on galaxy formation (GF) has progressed rapidly in the last decade. On one side GF is related or belongs to the question of the growth of structure in the Universe. On the other side, a GF model should consider the structural formation history, star formation history and the heavy element synthesis in the galaxies. This stage is highly nonlinear and many complicated physics are involved. Though they are difficult to study, recent years have witnessed a very fast development in the observational technique and astronomers do find a mounting evidence for strong activity at moderate redshift (z < 5) which one can reach observationally. So the question is: can one observe the GF directly? Or have we already detected the major part of it? If so, can these observations fit in the framework of structure formation?
