We present the results of a large effort to investigate what, if anything, can be determined from observations of solar photospheric magnetic fieldsconcerning the flare productivity of active regions. Different aspects ofthis work include examining the temporal variations of the field prior toflare events, and applying the Magnetic Charge Topology model in order toquantify the variations of the coronal topology prior to flare events.A slightly different approach was also investigated, by dropping thetime-sequence data and using a statistically significant data-base of"daily" magnetograms. Throughout, a statistical evaluation based onDiscriminant Analysis was used to determine how the two populations inquestion (flare-producing and flare-quiet) could best be differentiated, often using numerous variables simultaneously. In this presentation, the results from this project will be summarized in the context offlare-forecasting but also in the context of applying the results tomodeling efforts.
