Cometary Impacts, Comet Crash Predictions
Scientific paper
Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9, 1993e, discovered in 1993 March, was torn apart in a close encounter with Jupiter the previous year. At present it consists of a train of 17 or more fragments strung out along its orbit. It has been captured into a very eccentric orbit about Jupiter, and is predicted to crash into the planet in 1994 July. The comet itself will be invisible and the impacts will be on the far side, but the sides will rotate round to our view within a few hours; there may still be clearly visible effects.
