IR spectroscopic spectra of P/Swift-Tuttle in the 2.9-3.6 microns region exhibit emission from the nu3 band of cometary methanol at 3.52 microns. The weighted average for the relative abundance of methanol relative to water is found to be 7 +/- 1 percent, supporting the concept that methanol constitutes a significant portion of cometary volatile carbon. These spectra show that the nu2 and nu9 bands of methanol make up 60 percent of the 3.4-micron-centered 'cometary organic feature'.
